Medicross mourns the passing of managing practitioner, Dr Johan Coetzee

Deepest condolences to Dr Coetzee’s family

Medicross Springs expressed their sadness at the passing of Dr Johan Coetzee, managing practitioner at the primary healthcare centre, at the age of 74 on Wednesday, 22 January.

“On behalf of Medicross management and staff, I wish to express our deepest condolences to Dr Coetzee’s family during this most difficult time," says Salome Liebenberg, general manager: operations at Medicross.

Dr Coetzee started practising at Medicross Springs as a general practitioner in 1991.

"We will remember Dr Coetzee for the indelible mark he has made as a compassionate, skilful and caring doctor who touched the lives of many people in the community. He was highly respected and much loved by his colleagues and patients, as well as by the staff and management of Medicross Springs where he practised for the last 29 years," Liebenberg adds.

Dr Coetzee practised at the healthcare centre for the last 29 years and has been a general practitioner for more than 49 years. He will be remembered for dedicating his life’s work to the healthcare profession. Dr Coetzee leaves behind a lasting legacy and will be sorely missed.

“Dr Coetzee will be sorely missed by his colleagues who saw him not only as their leader but also as a friend. He was considered a giant in the community and an inspiration to all,” remarks Dr Billyy van der Merwe, managing director of Netcare’s Primary Care Division, which includes Medicross.

Dr Coetzee is survived by his wife, Pauline, two daughters, Michelle van der Walt and Christy Fowlds, as well as his grandchildren.

"Dr Coetzee was considered an excellent businessman in addition to being an exceptional general practitioner. He was also a member of Medicross’ Medical Practitioner Association (MPA) for years," says Van der Merwe.

He loved nature and enjoyed deep-sea fishing, sports cars, athletics and playing squash. He was a great storyteller and his colleagues fondly recall how he entertained them with anecdotes from his younger years.

“Dr Coetzee has left a lasting legacy of care and excellence at Medicross Springs and the team and we will honour his memory by continuing his important work. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family as well as to the many people whose lives he touched. He will be sorely missed,” Van der Merwe concludes.
