Medicross is open during lockdown

Western Cape medical and dental centres ready to provide primary healthcare services, as always

Tuesday, April 14 2020

As an essential service provider, Medicross medical and dental centres continue to operate and are ready to serve your healthcare needs throughout the national lockdown.

“We wish to advise our communities that they can continue to rely on the services of Medicross medical and dental centres during the national COVID-19 lockdown,” says Dr Billyy van der Merwe, managing director of Netcare’s primary care division.

“Seeking healthcare is permitted during lockdown, and there is no need for people to suffer illness or discomfort at home. We remain ready to assist where needed. In addition, an increasing number of GPs at Medicross facilities are offering virtual consultations in response to the pandemic as a means of assessing and supporting our patients.”

Flu-like symptoms or suspected COVID-19?

“If you suspect you may have COVID-19, or even if you have flu-like symptoms, or have lost your sense of smell or taste – which have also been identified as symptoms of COVID-19 – please be sure to phone the Medicross centre in advance and inform them of this,” he advises.

The symptoms of COVID-19 include mild to severe respiratory illness with cough, sore throat, current or recent fever and shortness of breath.

“Bring any relevant information to their attention including your recent travel history, contact with persons who had recently travelled to countries with COVID-19 outbreaks, personal contact with a person with confirmed COVID-19, or symptoms potentially associated with COVID-19 that you are experiencing.”

The doctor may ask specific questions to assess your risk, advise whether you need to be tested for COVID-19, and give you a referral to a pathology laboratory for testing to be done.

“If you have phoned your doctor and they want you to come to the consulting rooms, they will be able to take the necessary safety precautions to assist you promptly when you arrive whilst safeguarding themselves and others at the facility from possible infection.”

Your doctor may examine you and give you a referral to a pathology laboratory for testing to be done or take a swab from inside your nose and mouth, which will be sent to a pathology laboratory for COVID-19 testing. You should receive the results within 48 to 72 hours, and you should self-quarantine at home until the results are known.

“Medicross assures families and individuals in our Western Cape communities that we as primary healthcare partner remains committed to their needs in the weeks and months ahead,” Dr Van der Merwe concludes.
